Faithful Friend

Ever since the day I met you

And your hopeful eyes met mine,

I knew you’d be a friend to me,

A way to pass the time.

What I didn’t see so long ago

When first I took you home,

Were the ways in which you’d change my life-

There’s no way I could have known.

You’ve celebrated all my joys

And stood with me when times were bad.

Your love for me was unconditional,

The truest friend I’ve ever had.

You’ve given endless hours of laughter

With all the silly things you’ve done,

And when my life got too hectic

You reminded me to have some fun.

Even in my darkest hours

When I didn’t treat you fair,

You never held a grudge toward me,

Rather more, you seemed to care.

So many things you’ve taught me:

How to love and to forgive;

To be grateful for the things you have-

The purest ways to live.

But as time passed by I’ve noticed

That you haven’t been the same.

The stoic soul you are, my Friend

You never have complained.

I’ve watched each step get harder

And known the end was drawing near,

But still you came to comfort me

With each heartbroken tear.

I know you see this isn’t easy.  In fact,

It’s the hardest thing I’ll ever do.

But watching as you labor, Friend,

I know this is just no life for you.

And so I’ll hug you tightly,

And be with you as you go.

But there’s one promise I must make to you,

One thing you have to know:

I’ve loved you from the day we met

And I’ll love you long beyond this end-

Forever in my heart you’ll live
